There is no limit on the adventures that afford a European River Cruise.
One of my own Bucket List travels includes visiting the beautiful truffle growing region in France.
These earthy robust epicurean delights (not to mention aphrodisiacs) are treasured in the finest restaurants around the world. They hail from France where along with fine wines and chocolate, they are highly prized. ( No, they are not chocolate…we’ll save that for another time)
Because Truffles grow near oak trees and sometimes in fragrant lavender fields, a truffle farm is always a beautiful scenic walk. Truffles were at one time searched for using pigs but nowadays, truffle hunting dogs are used. Truffles are so elusive that neither man nor machine can locate them on their own. Only the canine’s keen sense of smell can find the fungus which grows underground. You do need to hurry to scoop the truffle up once the dog begins digging, then reward them with a special doggie treat.
This is a charming ritual that has been taking place for years and still continues in a day where technology has virtually taken over everything else in our lives. When you find yourself in France’s distinguished truffle growing region, make a point to observe the specially trained dogs in action as they hunt for their treasure.
Whether they are sprinkled over handmade pastas, elegant risottos, flavorful bruschetta or mouthwatering omelettes, truffles are sought after by not only foodies, but man’s best friend as well. Bon apetit!
